We have been granted permission from the city of Covington to renovate a space in the basement of our clothes closet for an emergency space. This space will include a bedroom and bathroom. This space is needed due to the overwhelming homeless and transient population. This is to be a temporary space. Our case management team assists the client with the next steps. Refuge in Storm Emergency Services also provide household essentials to families in need, utility assistance, and food. Over the past several months, we have been called upon to assist individuals who have either been evicted, homeless, or transient. Much of our operating budget was spent on providing hotel stays for these individuals, along with providing necessities such as food and personal items. The larger non-profit organizations have extensive criteria that individuals in distressed situations must meet. Our program cuts through the red tape to ensure that needs are met and that no one falls through the cracks. We were awarded funds to provide mortgage assistance and emergency hotel stays for families in crisis. This award was provided in September 2021. HOPE was the recipient of funding from FEMA for emergency housing. We provided emergency shelter for 68 families and 518 nights of shelter from October 2021 to January 2023.
