Helping Other People Excel (HOPE)
Since the humble beginnings of this organization, the goal has remained the same, just about 20 years later. That is, “To light the way for brighter futures, fostering lasting change.” It was a grassroots effort led by the husband-and-wife team, Pete and Wanda Moore of Covington, Va. They saw and responded to a need in their community, primarily dealing with a lack of resources for the youth population. In 1999, Pete started a young men’s mentoring program entitled K.O.O.L. Club. Meetings would be held a couple of times a month, featuring a speaker and a game of basketball by the participants. They realized that it would be in the best interest of the program to have an umbrella organization to cover them, as well as to offer other programs and services. In 2004, H.O.P.E. was organized as the covering organization. Many volunteers supported this effort and helped it grow into what it is today. They acquired 501-c-3 status from the IRS and began to operate a much-needed program based in the Allegany Highlands. Many of the programs at the outset focused primarily on the youth population, but they have now evolved into a community-based program that provides various supportive services, resources, and programs that benefit not only the youth but also adult individuals and families. The Moore’s are grateful for the support and all that have supported this effort through the years.
